Last week, I attended an academic exchange in Australia. I was visiting Australia by three Chinese warships after their mission in Somalia. So I witnessed the attention and deep surprise of the local media. Apart from the fact that the government did not announce the visit beforehand, the accident of Australian media lies in the new size of Chinese warships and the strict discipline of Chinese naval forces. These accidents also illustrate the necessity and urgency of strengthening military diplomacy and increasing international military exchanges and interactions, including warships.
Strengthening military diplomacy and enhancing military exchanges are conducive to demonstrating to all countries in the world, including the Asia-Pacific region, Chinas determination to maintain world strategic stability and regional peace, prosperity and development. Since the end of the cold war, the persistent pursuit of unilateralism, neo-conservatism and hegemonism by the superpowers has led to turbulence in the global situation, deterioration of international security and rampant terrorism, and also posed serious challenges to hard-won peace, stability, cooperation and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region.
When I attended the academic conference in South Pacific and other countries in the Asia-Pacific region, I deeply felt the anxiety of scholars about peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region, and the expectation and high expectation of China to safeguard the strategic stability of the world and the region. Some officials and scholars from developing countries who are deeply influenced by western theories are facing the bullying of regional security and national interests by big powers. They sincerely hope that China and other emerging countries can undertake international obligations and help to build regional checks and balances system in order to safeguard regional peace and develop the interests of small and weak countries.
Strengthening military diplomacy and enhancing military exchanges are conducive to demonstrating to all countries of the world Chinas sincerity for peaceful development and its firm will to end war, safeguard national interests and safeguard world peace. Since the founding of the Peoples Republic of China, China has been the least war-prone country among the worlds major military powers, and it is also the only permanent member of the Security Council who has never initiated foreign wars on its own initiative. Chinas tolerance and restraint should not be misinterpreted as weak and deceptive.
At an international academic seminar held recently, officials, scholars and soldiers from the United States and Australia asked me whether Chinas economic and trade cooperation with the South Pacific island countries has taken into account the interests of Western countries and the feelings of the people. After listening to this, I cant help asking: Did the United States and other Western carriers or warships take into account the feelings of the Chinese people when they wantonly deter the Taiwan Sea, the South China Sea and the East China Sea? Has regional peace and stability been taken into account? Did you take into account the danger of wiping guns and even causing war? The questioner was dumb. A doctoral officer of the Australian Army said to me after the meeting that the joint exercise of Panda Kangaroo and the field survival training conducted by the two armies last year enhanced the mutual understanding between the officers and soldiers of the two armies. At the same time, the desire for peace and the strong will of the Chinese officers and soldiers to defend the national interests impressed Australia deeply. Defending peace and not wanting to meet on the battlefield became the common aspiration of the officers and soldiers of the two armies.
Strengthening military diplomacy and enhancing military exchanges are also conducive to deepening the understanding of the Chinese army among the armies and people of all countries and curbing the demonization and stigmatization propaganda of the Chinese army and soldiers. After the visit of the Chinese warship, almost all the major Australian media sent reporters to follow up the whole story. Some media maliciously exaggerated the selection of Australian milk powder by Chinese soldiers and made far-fetched reports. However, it is a common practice for soldiers to land at rest and choose their own or family favorite specialties in compliance with the laws of their own countries and visiting countries. After some Chinese and foreign media clarified this, the gimmicks deliberately created by Australian media were shattered. On the contrary, the Chinese officers and soldiers were disciplined and well-behaved after landing, which left a positive impression on people. Even if some Australian media are selectively blind, the businessmen, people and tourists around the port all praise the Chinese army and soldiers for their civilized and powerful points.
