The Consulate-General said that in order to avoid the disaster of imprisonment, the Chinese Consulate-General in Mandalay reminded Chinese citizens who went to Myanmar to find girlfriends that they must do their homework well before going to Myanmar, understand Myanmars marriage laws and regulations in advance, and respect local customs and habits. The following five points must be achieved:
First, understand and abide by Myanmar citizensmarriage laws with foreigners to avoid suspected human trafficking;
Second, accurate verification of womens identity information, age as the focus, Myanmars legal age of marriage is 18 years old. Must check their ID card, must be over 18 years old;
Thirdly, it is necessary to ensure that the parties communicate voluntarily and obtain the consent of the parents of the parties.
Fourth, apply to the county court for registration of marriage and become a legal couple.
Fifth, dont think that money (lottery gifts) accepted by a woman or her family can be used as evidence of recognition of communication. Money lottery gifts are usually an important basis for judges to determine the abduction and trafficking of human beings.
The Chinese Consulate-General in Mandalay, Myanmar, introduced several related cases. In the first case, Chinese citizen A went to Myanmar to find a marriage partner, who claimed to be over 18 years old. Without verifying the identity card of the woman, he paid the bride gift (about RMB 20,000 yuan) to the woman and began to associate with her as a marriage partner. Myanmars foreign-related marriages need to apply to the law enforcement authorities of the registered permanent residence. When the local law enforcement authorities verified the identity of the woman, they found that the actual age of the woman was only 15 years old. They arrested Chinese citizen A and filed a case for investigation on the crime of luring minor girls to cohabit. A was sentenced to 10 yearsimprisonment.
In the second case, Chinese citizen B was introduced to Myanmar by a domestic marriage intermediary company to find a marriage partner. After listening to the introductions statement about marrying to China and living a prosperous and happy life, the Myanmar girl agreed to associate with B. However, the girls family did not agree with the marriage. B still visited the womans home many times and insisted on contacting her. Afterwards, the girls relatives reported the matter to the village head. Local police arrested B on the grounds that B was suspected of luring Myanmar girls to marry. The case is still under trial.
The Chinese Consulate-General in Mandalay reminded Chinese citizens to take the above cases as precautions and marry Myanmar brides legally and regularly to avoid the tragedy of happy events.
