Reference News Network reported on April 16, according to Taiwans Central News Agency website reported on April 13, Indian Defense Minister Sitaraman said that Indias procurement of Russian-made S-400 missile defense system is expected to obtain U.S. understanding and exemption from sanctions.
In an interview, Sitaraman said that the US government knows and understands the fact that Indian authorities purchased the S-400 missile defense system from Russia for $5.2 billion.
Reported that Indian Prime Minister Moody and Russian President Putin signed the arms procurement agreement in October last year in violation of U.S. regulations, to buy weapons from Russia, the United States will implement sanctions.

The U.S. government also warned NATO member Turkey that it would face sanctions if it purchased the S-400 missile system, and the United States suspended Turkeys participation in Lockheed Martins F-35 fighter program earlier this month.
Sitaraman said the US side took into account Indias need to procure weapons from Russia and other countries in order to maintain a strong partnership.
She pointed out that prior to the U.S. sanctions, India and Russia had already begun consultations on the S-400 missile system. Russia is a long-term supplier of arms to the Indian military.
As for the S-400 system, we have explained it well, and the United States knows and understands it, Sitaraman said. Asked if he was confident that India would be exempt from sanctions, Sitaraman said: Yes, I hope so.
