Recently, there has been a heated discussion on the 996 working system.

996 working system refers to working at 9:00 a.m., leaving at 9:00 p.m., and working six days a week. This argument stems from the Internet industry, where overtime is a serious phenomenon. Programmers have even launched a counterattack against todays 996, tomorrows ICU.

In response, Ma Yun, chairman of Alibabas board of directors, said 996 was a great blessing; Liu Qiangdong, chairman of Jingdongs board of directors, said he could still work 8116 + 8 (from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday to Saturday and 8 hours on Sunday).

However, their statements quickly aroused considerable controversy.

For scientific researchers, high-intensity work is common.

Teaching, scientific research, projects and all kinds of tedious daily work often keep scientific researchers busy. Not to mention 996, even 711 (7 a.m. to 11 p.m. and 7 days a week) is common.

As early as 2012, Professor Wang Xianwen of Dalian University of Technology and others analyzed the working hours of scientists in various countries by monitoring the download of scientific papers on Springer.

The conclusions are as follows: 1) Scientists basically have no weekends; 2) Scientists in the United States, Germany and China work at weekends at 68%, 64% and 77% of their usual intensity; 3) Scientists basically do not work at all.

In 2016, a survey of 12869 readers by Nature Magazine showed that about 40% of people work more than 60 hours a week, and nearly 10% work more than 80 hours a week.

However, many people engage in scientific research, more out of interest, so busy at the same time also enjoy the achievements and satisfaction of high-intensity work.

Shi Yigong, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and professor of Tsinghua University, once said on the Science Web blog that all successful scientists have something in common, that is, they must spend a lot of time and effort. This is a truth. In fact, no matter what kind of profession in society, if you want to be the best in this industry, you have to spend more time than ordinary people.

Later in the postgraduate period, my hard work in the laboratory was well known.

In my post-doctoral years in New York, it was the hardest two years of my life. Every night, I did experiments until about 3 oclock in the middle of the night, and it was often after 4 oclock when I went back to my place to lie down and sleep. But every morning at 8 oclock, I was awakened by the noise of cars on New York First Avenue outside the window and returned to my lab around 9 oclock to start a new day. Three meals a day are served in the laboratory at 9 a.m., 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. This rhythm of life lasts for 11 days. From Monday to Friday of the second week, I go back to my home in Baltimore by Greyhound coach on Friday night. I sleep for nearly 10 hours every day for two days on weekends to make up for the serious sleep loss in the past 11 days. Monday morning starts the next 11 days of struggle.

So what do researchers think of high-intensity work and 996?

Active 996 is virtue, passive 996 is vulgarity.

For the 996 work system, two sentences are enough: active 996 is a personal choice, may be a virtue; passive 996 is bullying others by force, it must be vulgar.

The same applies to academia. Scientific research is also a kind of social activity or social labor, but the specific ways of labor are different.

Young University teachers, especially themselves, need to teach undergraduate courses seriously. On the one hand, they need to strive for scientific research projects and support the team. On the other hand, they need to write academic papers patents. If they do not spell enough, they will be left behind sooner or later. Personally, I dont think there are many 996 jobs.

As far as I know, the vast majority of Internet companies are implementing the 996 working system, which is clearly in violation of the Labor Law, but it has become a common rule in the industry, and vulnerable employees can only bear it silently.

Although full-time university teachers do not sit in class, of course, there is no so-called 996 working system, but because of the particularity of the work of teachers, their working hours may be longer, especially the green pepper group.

Taking myself as an example, my working hours can be counted as 996.5, and I also have 0.5 days off on normal weekends, and I dont have much time off during holidays. The reason why I work overtime on my own initiative is because of the pressure of life. In a word, it is illegal to implement the 996 working system against personal will. It should not be advocated, let alone become the prevailing rule in the industry.

As a green pepper, I feel too tired! How exploitative!

It took a whole weekend and three days on Monday to prepare two 45-minute classes. This year, there are four lessons a week. I feel that I am preparing lessons every day and I cant rest on holidays. I dont know what to do with my scientific research.

Twenty years ago, after my masters degree, I worked as a programmer for five years. At that time, working in the company, although not as exaggerated as 996, but the style is similar. Colleagues around never leave work on time. I dont want to stay for more than two hours. Im too embarrassed to leave.

I think this model will seriously damage peoples creativity, so only low-end repetitive work can improve productivity. Sitting in a one-day class, peoples passion, interest and willpower are all exhausted, and most of the time is spent in grinding foreign workers and doing things. Over time, the whole person became numb. Therefore, I have no hesitation to return to the campus to study for a doctorate, in order to get rid of the magic of 996!

Scientific research is a very complicated high-end mental work, and we must not simply apply the time-consuming model. Excellent state of scientific research, I think the emphasis is on a nourishment word, which needs to be immersed in the enrichment of healthy material and spiritual material to nourish slowly, form a virtuous circle, and gradually improve self-cultivation.

Therefore, we should avoid excessive fatigue, especially anxiety. To do scientific research work, the time arrangement must be flexible, and some more time should be set aside to think. Some researchers seem to be slow-paced or even a little lazy, but they have achieved a lot; others seem to be tight, but they have no high-quality results. Every person who reads a blog has this state of stress.

Recently, it was pointed out that 996 enterprises are mainly mental and labor-intensive Internet enterprises. Simply increasing the working hours and intensity may not necessarily improve the productivity of enterprises. On the other hand, in some manufacturing industries where manual labor is relatively intensive, it is because of the increase in output requirements and long working hours, but people pay for overtime work. So some Internet companies put forward 996, this strategy can be more understood as disguised layoffs, evasion of responsibility or creating a sense of crisis under economic pressure; more is a gesture expression.

Researchers also do brainpower-intensive work, and there may be long-term work regardless of time and place; but in the scientific research system, most of them are relatively free, except for a few teams which force them to take classes and punch cards individually.

When I read the blog, busy time is 7 x 24, there are relatively relaxed time. It must have been busy, laborious and stressful at that time. Everyone who read it had such a state of stress. Looking back now, I wont feel so sad. Its also a memorable and progressive experience.
