Foreign media claim that China has military intentions in Hanbantota Port, Sri Lanka refutes

Sri Lankan Prime Minister Victor Masingha: Hanbantota Port is a joint venture between China and Sri Lanka because we have limited experience in management and attracting investment, so we cooperate with China Merchants Bureau Group. Hanbantota Port is a commercial project. Hanbantota Port Project has no military purpose. We welcome enterprises from any country to use port facilities here. At present, we have formulated a development plan for the special economic development zone of Hangang.

Former Sri Lankan President Rajapaksa said that on the basis of equality and mutual benefit, Chinese enterprises cooperate with Sri Lanka in accordance with commercial principles. Loans for these large projects are long-term loans at preferential interest rates, and there is no debt trap.

Sri Lankas former president, opposition leader Rajapaksa: I do not believe China has any military agenda related to the one belt and one road initiative. Chinas development is due to its economic strength, not to its military strength. Such claims about Chinas so-called debt trap and so-called military base network are propaganda tools for its competitors.
