Only three turtles in the world died during artificial insemination in Suzhou Zoo

Just now, the reporter learned from the Suzhou Zoo that on April 12, 2019, a team of international experts, together with the staff of the Suzhou Zoo, carried out insemination and artificial insemination of the only male and female zebra turtles left in China at the Suzhou Zoo. Before the formal insemination and fertilization, the expert team conducted physical and chemical indexes and ultrasound health examination on two zebra turtles, and found that they were in good health. Similar to the past four artificial insemination activities, the process of artificial insemination is smooth without any complications. Sadly, despite 24 hours of rescue, female zebra turtles did not recover and died unfortunately. The expert team collected ovarian tissue and stored it in liquid nitrogen for future use. The zoo said the team agreed to set up an autopsy team composed of experts from home and abroad to identify the cause of death.

The dead female turtle came from Changsha Zoo. According to the feeding records of Changsha Zoo, it should be over 90 years old. The male turtle in Suzhou Zoo is supposed to be about 100 years old. Source: Peng Mei News Responsible Editor: Qian Juanxiao_NBJ10675
