Assanges arrest in Ecuador: More than $6.2 million was spent to protect him

China Daily Online, April 12. Ulian Assange, founder of WikiLeaks, was arrested nearly seven years after his hiding in the British Embassy of Ecuador. According to CNN, the Ecuadorian government spent more than $6.2 million (41.64 million yuan) to protect Assange.

Ecuadors Minister for Foreign Affairs and Immigration, Jose Valencia, told the Ecuadorian National Congress on November 11 that from June 2012 to September 2018, Ecuador had paid more than $5.8 million for Assanges security costs (about 38.955 million yuan) and about $400,000 for medical, food, laundry and legal services (about 26.887 million yuan).

Valencia said that in 2018 the Ecuadorian Embassy in the United Kingdom reduced its security costs from $1 million a year (about 67.16 million yuan) to $600,000 (about 4.03 million yuan).

Earlier, the Associated Press reported that Assange had skateboarded late at night, harassed his guards and even smeared his own feces on the Embassy walls. Ecuador regards this as an insult to the country. Ecuadorian President Lenin Moreno Garces said on the 11th: We have ended our shelter for this spoiled boy.
