[Global Network Military Report] Turkish Foreign Minister Chavushcolu said on April 11 that if the United States refuses to export Patriot air defense systems to Turkey, Ankara may continue to buy Russian S-400 air defense missile systems.
According to the Russian Satellite News Agency on April 11, Chavushcolu said on NTV television: If the United States does not sell us Patriots, then we will purchase the second batch of S-400 systems, or other air defense systems. He also pointed out that it was absurd for Washington to question whether Ankara should remain in NATO because Turkey purchased the S-400. He added: Some NATO members have the S-300 system, which is not inconsistent with membership.
Chavushcolu said Ankara would find a replacement for the F-35 if the United States refused to supply it with F-35 fighters because of Turkeys purchase of the S-400 system. If the F-35 is not available, Turkey will buy similar aircraft from other countries, which will continue until we start producing our own Five Generations, he said.
Turkey had previously said it would not abandon its plan to buy the S-400 anti-aircraft missile system and said that the first S-400 would be delivered in July. The United States claims that the S-400 system is incompatible with NATO standards and has repeatedly threatened to impose sanctions on Ankara if Turkey purchases the S-400 from Russia, or to postpone or cancel the supply of F-35 fighters. The U.S. Department of Defense confirmed on April 1 that it would suspend the export of F-35 fighter planes to Ankara.
