Firefighters recall the moment when the fire exploded in Muli: mushroom clouds 50 or 60 meters high

On March 30, a forest fire broke out in Muli County, Liangshan Prefecture. In order to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby villages and towns, firefighters in Liangshan retrograde into the primeval forest to put out the fire. In the afternoon of March 31, the fire was suddenly deflagrated due to the sudden change of wind direction. Of the 30 firefighters killed, 26 were from Xichang Brigade of Liangshan Forest Fire Brigade.

Zhang Jun and members of Xichang Brigade returned to Xichang Station from Muli Fire Site in the early morning of the 3rd, and they could also see black marks left by many fires on their orange fire suits. Zhang Jun recalled that after the deflagration, the fire was fan-shaped and spread rapidly. For this veteran who has been engaged in fire fighting for more than ten years and has participated in hundreds of forest fire fighting, this kind of deflagration is also the first time to meet.

The Muli Fire Rescue is the 14th fire fighting mission of Xichang Brigade since the Lunar New Year in 2019. After receiving the instructions, they took 6 hours to reach Lier village of Yalongjiang Town, Muli County, and under the leadership of villagers, they walked for 8 hours to the rescue front line of Muli Fire Field. Then they gradually divided into several sub-units in the process of fighting the fire.

Zhao Mao, deputy head of the fourth squadron of Xichang Brigade, was also in a team of 10 people. Only he and three other members escaped from the fire. That was the longest 10 seconds of my life. It felt like a century. Zhao Mao also recalled that after hearing the explosion, the squad leader climbed up a big tree and looked down. He found smoke below. He immediately decided to evacuate, but in a few seconds the fire spread from the foot of the mountain to the ditch where they were.

When Zhao Maoyis team ran to a ridge, a bar about 1 meter in diameter fell in front of them and stopped the way. I pushed the instructor in front of me onto the crossbar and climbed up with my last strength. Zhao Mao also said that when he rolled down the hillside, he felt the fire burning behind him, and his ears were full of wind and explosions.

Zhao Mao and three teammates rushed out of the fire and shouted their names, but no response was heard. When I finally looked at the fire, I saw the despair of the little soldiers behind me. Zhao Mao also cried and said that although the explosion had passed for four days, every day he dreamed that his teammates would stretch out their burnt hands and say, Team mate, pull me a hand.

After this battle, Zhao Mao, who returned to his residence, felt particularly profoundly the red characters go through fire and water on the external wall of his residence. Firefighters who have experienced many times of forest fire rescue feel deeply about it. Yang Jie, head of the fourth squadron of Xichang Brigade, told reporters that he participated in all the fire fighting tasks this year, but the Muli fire did not go. The teammates who came back from the front said that the people we live must complete the unfinished work for the brother who died in Muli. The cotton quilt with tofu blocks overlapped on the single bed has distinct edges and corners, and the military green towels hanging on the walls in the water house are arranged in a straight line... Although 26 members of the Xichang Brigade can no longer return to the brigade, they still remain in the room where they are stationed before the forest fire. The only difference was that the uniforms they kept in the wardrobe were stripped of their shoulder badges. After the reform of Chinas emergency management system, Xichang Forest Fire Brigade has withdrawn from active service, but the brigade still handed the 26 shoulder badges to their grieving relatives in accordance with military practice.
