China news agency, Paris, March 6 (Xinhua) - A police raid by prison inmates took place on March 5, local time in France. At present, the incident has resulted in one death and two injuries. French officials have characterized it as a terrorist attack.
French media reported details of the incident on the 6th. Michael Ziolo, a 27-year-old prisoner, attacked prison guards at a prison in Owen province, northwest France, using his wifes visit to the prison that day, and then held a deadlock with police for up to 10 hours.
Police raided that night and captured Ceolo. Ziolos wife was injured in the raid and was later declared dead. Two prison guards were injured in the attack, one of them seriously.
Police preliminary investigation suggested that the knife used by Ziolo to attack prison guards that day may have been brought by his wife, but it is not clear how the knife passed the prison security check. Agence France-Presse quoted prison sources as saying that the scene was full of bloodstains and a mess.
French Interior Minister Castaney described the attack as a terrorist attack, and the French Ministry of Justice said it would conduct further investigations. The incident prison is considered to be one of the highest security prisons in France. After the incident, security measures in the prison were upgraded.
Ziolo was sentenced to 30 years in prison for robbing and killing an 89-year-old man in 2012 with his colleagues. Police investigations suggest that he accepted extremist ideas in prison; he recently spread extremist rhetoric in prison, thereby increasing his sentence by one year. (end)
