On March 6, Xinjing News reporters learned from Song Baozhen, director of the drama Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Arts, that Tian Benxiang, the honorary president of the Chinese Academy of Drama Theory and History, the former director, researcher, doctoral supervisor and expert in the history of Chinese drama, died of illness at 20:30 on March 5, 2019 at the age of 87.

Tian graduated from the Chinese Department of Nankai University in 1961 and from the Chinese Department of Nankai University in 1964. In 1965, he went to Beijing Broadcasting Institute as a professor and associate professor. In 1985, he became a professor in the Department of Drama and Literature, Central Academy of Drama. In 1987, he came to the Director of the Drama Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Art. His research achievements on Chinese dramatists Cao Yu, Lao She, Guo Moruo and Jiao Juyin are remarkable. His research achievements on Beijing School of Ren Yi Opera and local academies have promoted the sound development of drama ecology. He is a leading figure in the study of Chinese drama. At the same time, its academic research spans many fields and has made outstanding achievements in modern and contemporary Chinese literature, drama and film and television literature.

Tians main works include On Cao Yus Plays, Guo Moruos Historical Plays, Cao Yus Biography and so on. In 1986, he was the main lecturer of the Literature Review Course of Central Radio and TV University and participated in the compilation of the textbook Writing of Literature Review.
