China-US Economic and Trade Negotiations Make Phased Progress

Wang Yi said that in 2018, facing the rampancy of unilateralism, the rise of protectionism and the rampage of bullying, China has always stood on the right side of historical development, on the international side of fairness and justice, and on the side of the common interests of the vast majority of countries. It should be said that we have not only well safeguarded our legitimate rights and interests, but also vigorously defended the basic principles of international relations and safeguarded the common interests of most countries in the world.

Wang Yi said that the focus in this respect is reflected in Sino-US economic and trade negotiations or trade frictions.

We see that, as a phase of progress, the two sides are still coming back to the negotiating table to solve the problem through negotiation and dialogue. Negotiations and dialogues have also made important progress. This general direction is in line with the interests of both the Chinese and American people and the general basic interests of the international community. Wang Yi added.

Hanoi Meeting lays the foundation for future settlement of the Peninsula issue

Wang Yi said that Chinas peripheral diplomacy was impressive last year. Sino-Japanese relations are back on track and have made new breakthroughs. As two major neighbouring countries, two major developing countries and two major new economies, China and India have shown a positive momentum for overall improvement and development through General Secretary Xi Jinpings meeting with Premier Modi in Wuhan last year. The situation in the South China Sea has further stabilized, and China and ASEAN countries have accelerated consultations with new organizations in the South China Sea to play a role in stabilizing the situation in the South China Sea. It has played an important and constructive role.

He made special mention of the situation on the Korean Peninsula, which also witnessed significant and positive changes last year.

The DPRK side has raised the banner of denuclearization again, by adjusting its national development strategy and concentrating on economic development, we, as a friendly neighbor of DPRK, certainly support such a correct direction. Wang Yi said, We see that the United States is also willing to meet with the DPRK and work together to solve the development problem. Under the impetus of all parties, the two sides met in Singapore and issued a declaration. The most important one is to realize the complete denuclearization of the peninsula, and the second is to establish a peninsula merger mechanism. This is consistent with the two-track parallel we have always advocated, even the expression is consistent, which shows that it is indeed a viable way to solve the nuclear issue on the peninsula.

The recent Hanoi meeting is also of great concern to all of you. I dont think the success of this meeting depends entirely on whether a statement has been made or not, but more importantly,Meeting. The two sides have conducted in-depth communication, gained a better understanding of each others positions, and provided better conditions for more specific negotiations and solutions to the problems in the next step. Wang Yi said, Meeting and meeting are better than not meeting. Once you meet, you will make progress once, you will have harvest once, and you will have value once.

South-to-South Passage may rise to national strategy

At the meeting, Wang Yi affirmed Chongqings vigorous efforts to promote opening up, believing that Chongqings foreign affairs management has been upgraded to a new level.

In 2017, the governments of Chongqing, Guangxi, Guizhou and Longzhou signed the Framework Agreement on the South-to-South Corridor of China-Singapore Interconnection Project in Chongqing, namely the South-to-South Corridor between China and Singapore. Since then, Chongqing has continuously promoted the construction of the southward corridor of China-Singapore interconnection project.

Chongqing has taken the lead in Singapores strategic and cooperative projects, and after this years efforts, it has risen to a concept of strategic cooperation at the national level. Wang Yi said that the National Development and Reform Commission has formulated a comprehensive plan for this purpose, and the Ministry of Commerce has also made a lot of investment in promoting the new land-sea corridor.

He believed that as a new road between land and sea, the South-to-South Passage not only connected the Silk Road Economic Belt and the maritime Silk Road, but also coincided with the strategy of western development and the Yangtze River Economic Belt.

In this way, Chongqing fully mobilizes resources and advantages, stands at the forefront of the western development, serves the countrys overall external development and foreign affairs, but also injects strong vitality into the development of Chongqing, and opens up a broader prospect and space. Wang Yi said.
