According to Taiwans United Network reported yesterday, the United States Taekwondo Open 2019 opened in Las Vegas on February 28, lasting four days. A total of 14 venues held the competition last Sunday (3 days). On the 8th venue, the flag of the Republic of China appeared together with the flags of the United States, Canada and other countries.

According to the Nagoya Resolution of the International Olympic Committee in 1979 and the Lausanne Agreement of 1981 (full name Agreement between the International Olympic Committee and the Chinese Taipei Olympic Committee), Taiwan can only participate in various formal international sports events in the name of Chinese Taipei, and use special flags, emblems and flag songs. If they do not comply, they will face suspension, disqualification or even loss of membership by the IOC.

The five-ring plum-and-flower flag is commonly used in international sports events in Taiwan region of China.

After the flag problem was found, the continental team immediately protested to the organizers and asked for a suspension of the competition. The organizers eventually removed all six flags.

After the match, Jay Warwick, secretary-general of the American Taekwondo Association, issued an open letter expressing sincere apologies for the incident and promising to strengthen the review with the organizers to ensure that such incidents do not occur again.
