Invitations to Oceanian athletes are limited to events that qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics through the Asian Games, including volleyball, beach volleyball, basketball, football and fencing.
Australian Olympic Committee President John Cotts said Thursday that he has been striving for Australia and other Oceanian countries to enter the Asian Games for decades. Australia cherishes this opportunity very much, and our Oceanian neighbors must be willing to join.
Due to the limited number of participants, we may have to weed out some of the athletes and make some trade-offs, but the most important thing is that we ensure the qualifications of the Hangzhou Asian Games in 2022. Although the process is difficult, our efforts have not been in vain, which will ultimately benefit Oceania athletes, Cotts said.
Previously, Australian athletes participated in the third East Asian Games held in Osaka, Japan, but were not eligible for medals. Oceania athletes have also been invited to participate in the Asian Winter Games and Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games.
