The Pentagon said in a late statement on February 2 that acting U.S. Defense Secretary Shanahan and South Korean Defense Minister Zheng Jingdou spoke by telephone on the same day. During the call, the two sides decided to stop the U.S. -South Korean joint military exercise code-named Key Decision and Harrier Eagle from this year and replace it with smaller-scale special training.

The Harrier Eagle exercise began in 1961 and was the largest military exercise between the United States and South Korea. It involved 30,000 U.S. troops and 200,000 Korean troops. Since 2007, the critical decision exercises have focused on computer simulation.

After cancelling the two exercises, the United States and South Korea will launch a new joint command post exercise code-named Alliance. According to the South Korean Joint Staff Headquarters, the exercise adjusted the key decision and kite eagle exercises, focusing on strategy, combat and tactics. The Alliance exercise aims to strengthen the Korea-US partnership and enhance the will of the defensive forces of South Korea and its surrounding areas.

On April 2, 2017, the South Korean Navy participated in the Korea-US joint military exercise Harrier Eagle landing exercise in Puxiang, South Korea.

The Alliance exercise will be held from today until the 12th of this month, excluding weekends. The Pentagon also said that close coordination of military activities between the United States and South Korea will continue to support diplomatic efforts to promote the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. It is reported that since the historic summit of US and DPRK leaders held in Singapore last year, the US has reduced its military exercises with the ROK. Trump, however, has no plans to withdraw from South Korea for the time being. At present, the United States has 28,500 troops in South Korea.
