Recently, referring to news and other media, military media were quoted to release high-definition panoramic pictures of Yongshu Island, Nansha Islands, China, including details of various construction projects on the island.
In fact, the unsinkable aircraft carrier built by China in Nansha is not only Yongshu Island. In Nansha, Yongshu, Meiji and Zhubi have already formed the trend of cutting corners.
On the eve of last years Army Building Festival, the military media published an article saying, Today, the artificially reclaimed Meiji Island, Zhubi Island and Yongshu Island have become unsinkable carriers in the South China Sea. The title of this article is The days of holding back are over at last.
Changing reefs into islands will benefit the country and the people and the army
The data show that Yongshu Island is an artificial extension of the reef in the southwest of Yongshu Reef. From August 2014 to April 2015, China completed the dredging and reclamation operation on the southwest land area of Yongshu Reef (the land area where water comes out at low tide is reef land). The area of Yongshu Reef is 2.8 square kilometers.
Not enough image? According to the comparison of government and knowledge, Male, the capital of Maldives, is located on an island with an area of 1.5 square kilometers and a population of more than 100,000. That is to say, Yongshu Island is now about the size of two Maldivescapitals. Liang Fang, a professor at the National Defense University, wrote in his personal microblog: The Yongshu Reef, which used to cover less than 0.2 square kilometers, has now become a 2.8 square kilometer Yongshu Island, equivalent to the deck area of 109 Nimitz-class aircraft carriers. Bureau seat Zhang Zhaozhong once lamented: In a few months, from a high tide will disappear after the reef into a water city, which for me, a study of the South China Sea for decades, are not dare to think of things.
Song Zhongping, a military commentator, told Zheng that from a political and military point of view, the artificial extension of natural reefs in the South China Sea would undoubtedly help to safeguard the territorial and sovereign integrity of the South China Sea islands and would be of great benefit to Chinas national security in the South China Sea. On the other hand, from an economic point of view, we also need to develop, utilize and transform the South China Sea. With such a foothold, it will be of great help to the economic activities of the South China Sea, including the protection of fishermen. In addition, from the perspective of emergency rescue, Nansha Islands and Reefs can be used as a foothold to deal with public security emergencies, which is of great significance for the establishment of public security emergencies system in the South China Sea. To sum up, building the South China Sea Islands and Reefs for the benefit of the country, the people and the army is also a sign of responsibility to the international community.
How about food, clothing, shelter and transportation on the island?
Geographically, Nansha Island Reef is located at the equatorial margin. The environment of high salinity, high humidity and high temperature made it once regarded as a forbidden zone for life at sea.
In March 1987, at the 14th meeting of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO, it was decided that China would establish Oceanographic Observatory No. 74 in the Nansha Islands. In 1988, China selected Yongshu Reef as the UNESCO Ocean Observatory, namely the Nansha Yongshu Reef Observatory, with a sovereign monument.
At the beginning of the garrison, the officers and soldiers built the first generation of high-feet house with bamboo poles and cow felt in the storms and waves. During the rainy season, the high-feet house became the cats ear hole in the sea. In order to enhance the stability of barracks, officers and soldiers built the second generation of high-feet houses with iron pipes and sheets. However, the barracks wrapped with iron sheets can hardly withstand the sun exposure, and the indoor heat is hard to endure, and the comfort level is not high. Nowadays, the reinforced concrete buildings have greatly improved the living conditions of the island.
Data show that air conditioning, television, washing machine and other electrical appliances are all available in Nansha officers and soldiersdormitories, and 4G signals are fully covered. The officers and soldiers have their own training grounds, basketball courts and football fields. In addition, Yongshu Island has built a second-class first-class hospital, opening more than 10 specialized departments such as general internal medicine and general surgery, and equipped with emergency treatment room, rescue room, Emergency Pharmacy and other functional units. More interestingly, Zheng Zhizhi (Wechat ID: upolitics) noticed that there was a 1.1 acre modern vegetable greenhouse in the building complex in the photo. It can be said that the islands current living conditions, food and clothing, have directly followed the Inland cities.
Deployment of weapons for civil purposes
In addition to living facilities, how the islands military defense facilities are most likely to be of concern to readers.
In July 2017, the US media published an article revealing that Chinas new missile shelter on Yongshu Island increased to 12 Military facilities. In response, Li Jie, a military expert, said in the Global Times that Chinas construction of islands and reefs in the South China Sea is a matter of sovereignty and has the responsibility and obligation to defend its sea areas and airspace. As for the increase in military facilities and when, no one else is entitled to interfere. The practice of the corresponding agencies and organizations of the United States in the situation in the South China Sea is that the wicked first complain in an attempt to disrupt international public opinion, and then achieve their own military intervention to maintain the so-called free navigation.
In the same year, at a press conference of the Ministry of National Defense, some media inquired about the purpose of Chinas deployment of rockets on Yongshu Island. In response, Ren Guoqiang, a spokesman for the Ministry of National Defense, said that in the construction of South China Sea islands and reefs, China deployed weapons to meet the necessary military defense, mainly for civil purposes.
Zheng Zhizhi noticed that the media had previously disclosed that Yongshu Island would become Chinas largest material distribution center in Nansha. It is not difficult to understand that this requires large military aircraft, large ships to berth, from this public photo can be seen that these infrastructure Yongshu Island has been completed. A few years ago, the civil aviation test flight of Yongshu Island Airport had been successful, and the family members of the guards and soldiers also took the civil aviation airliner to Nansha in 2016 to visit relatives. Military newspapers have publicly stated that Yongshu Island Airport can meet the transport-20 take-off and landing. The Research Report on the Nansha Islands published by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) of the US think tank in 2016 has shown the various infrastructure constructed by China on Yongshu Island. Pictures show that in 2016, the island has built a runway of about 3,000 meters long and attached taxiway, a number of fixed hangars and a harbour for large ships to berth.
It can be well built and well defended.
More proud is that China has not only expanded a reef in Nansha. In fact, Yongshu Island has two neighbors - Zhubi Island and Meiji Island.
Data show that among Yongshu, Zhubi and Meiji, Yongshu Island is actually the smallest exposed area of Yongshu Island:
Yongshu Island: 2.8 square kilometers
Zhubi Island: 4.3 square kilometers
Meiji Island: 5.6 square kilometres
According to Song Zhongpings analysis, at present, Meiji Island, Yongshu Island and Zhubi Island in Nansha have formed a triangular corner. These three islands and reefs are interdependent and can form an effective regional control capability. In addition, they are also linked with Xisha Islands, which is of great help to safeguard the sovereignty and territorial integrity of our country in the South China Sea. If there is a sudden situation in the South China Sea, these three islands will emerge. Reef, Chinas disposal capacity will be greatly enhanced. At present, many facilities on the South China Sea islands and reefs can undoubtedly achieve dual-use of both military and civilian. It is based on dual-use and civil-military integration that our military capabilities are regularly deployed in various regions of the South China Sea to achieve effective deployment, thus forming an island chain-like linking capacity and safeguarding the interests of our country within the scope of the U-shaped line.
These three reefs, together with some of our other reefs, will form a joint defense system, which is actually a fixed reef defense system. In case of emergencies, we will cooperate with our own future aircraft carrier battle groups, including other surface vessels, to achieve a unified, dynamic and static defense system in the South China Sea. With the continuous improvement of Chinas military capabilities, our island reef management and control capabilities are also constantly improving, and the operational radius of our weapons and equipment is constantly increasing. These things make Chinas reefs in the South China Sea not only able to build, but also able to defend. This confidence should still exist, Song Zhongping said.
