A vegetative woman in Phoenix, Arizona, who has been in a coma for more than 10 years, gave birth at the end of 2018, triggering a police investigation and attracting national attention. After nearly a month of search and arrest, police recently arrested a male nurse accusing him of sexually assaulting the incapacitated woman.
According to CNN and Overseas Chinese Daily, Phoenix Police Chief Williams announced Tuesday that they had arrested a 36-year-old licensed professional nurse, Sutherland, who was in charge of caring for the victims at Hacienda Health Care. Police Crime Laboratory arrested Sutherland on the same day after confirming that her DNA matched the DNA of a woman vegetative who gave birth to a baby.
It is reported that the male nurse has been imprisoned in Maricopa County Prison, he was charged with a sexual assault and abuse of vulnerable adults, the next time to appear in court is January 30. Police said Sutherland had been working at the facility since 2011 and investigators were trying to determine whether he had attacked other people or whether the victim had been attacked several times.

According to the victims lawyer, the family of the woman had heard about Sutherlands arrest, but refused to comment further. The parents of the victims also explained their daughters coma through a lawyer. They said that although she could not speak, the victim could move her limbs, head and neck slightly. She can also respond to voices and make facial expressions.
US media reported that the victim, a 29-year-old woman, was admitted to the Grand Manor Nursing Center 14 years ago and had to be cared for 24 hours. On December 29, 2018, she suddenly moaned in pain. Medical staff arrived and found that she was giving birth and delivering her baby. The woman gave birth to a healthy baby. An anonymous person once told the media: As far as I know, people dont know what happened when she shouted because of pain in the pelvis. Before she gave birth, no worker knew she was pregnant. Afterwards, Bill Timmons, the chief executive of the nursing center, resigned.
