[Global Network Military Report of January 23] Russian Satellite News Agency reported on January 21 that a person familiar with the matter told Russian Satellite News Agency that an armored personnel carrier BTR-80 of the Russian army had fallen into a 40-metre deep canyon in Abkhazia, killing three Russian soldiers in the vehicle, and the relevant authorities had filed a criminal case.

According to the news office of the southern Russian military region, on January 18, when a team of military equipment went from the training ground on the hill to the stationing point, one of the BTR-80 armored vehicles rolled into the canyon at a dangerous section of the road, killing three soldiers and injuring two others.

The source said: The armored vehicle was driving along the shoulder of the dirt road in the procession. The collapse of the road caused the vehicle to roll into a canyon 40 meters deep. He added that the wounded soldiers had been taken to a hospital in Sukhumi.

The South Russian Military Region Commission is investigating the cause of the accident, which may be caused by technical failure of armored vehicles or improper operation of drivers.
