BEIJING, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) According to the website of the Hong Kong Star Island Daily, a 24-year-old Mainland woman traveling to Hong Kong from Foshan, Guangdong, was hit by a glass window falling at the Meihua Hotel on Nathan Road, Tsimshatsui, Hong Kong on the morning of the 21st. She was rushed to hospital in a coma and died at noon. Hong Kong police arrested a cleaning woman suspected of falling from a height.

The incident occurred around 10 a.m. on the 21st, when a cleaning worker opened a 144 cm long and 30 cm wide window in a room on the 16th floor of the Meihua Hotel, the window suddenly fell and hit the hostess who was passing through Nathan Road. After that, the fragments of the glass windows were scattered, ranging from about 6 meters to 6 meters.

Reportedly, after the incident, several police officers went to the scene to search for evidence, including checking the fingerprints on the window frames, broken glass, and picking up the window frames and the coats left by the dead woman. The serious case team of the police took over the investigation.

The 24-year-old woman, surnamed Zuo, who died unfortunately, went shopping with her boyfriend from Foshan on the morning of the 21st, and was hit by a falling aluminium window as she passed the scene.

Chen Jiaying, senior inspector of the Youjianwang Police District Serious Cases Unit, said that guests could not open the glass windows of the hotels involved by themselves. Only hotel staff had specific keys to open them.

Chen Jiaying also pointed out that the glass window involved fell when the cleaning woman tried to push it open, and that it fell as soon as the window was opened. She said that the damage to the windows had not been confirmed and further tests were needed.

When asked whether there was smoke in the room, Chen Jiaying said that further investigation was still needed. She also said that the man with the female deceased was slightly injured and was discharged after being sent to hospital for treatment.

Meihua Group issued a statement expressing its deep sorrow for the incident and offering its deep condolences to the families of the deceased. The hotel is actively cooperating with the police in their investigation. It also said that it will try its best to provide assistance if necessary.
