Overseas media said U.S. Navy Secretary of Operations Richardson declared on January 18 that despite Chinas military technological progress, the U.S. Navy would not rule out sending an aircraft carrier across the Taiwan Strait.
According to Reuters on January 18, Washington sent warships across the Taiwan Strait three times in 2018, but did not send carriers. The U.S. military has not dispatched aircraft carriers to navigate this area for more than 10 years.

Richardson told reporters in Tokyo, Japan, that the United States does not feel that there are any restrictions on what type of warships it is sending to the Taiwan Strait. Sending U.S. aircraft carriers across the Taiwan Strait remains an option for the U.S. Navy.
It is noteworthy that Richardsons statement took place just after his visit to China. During his visit to China from 13 to 16, he met with senior Chinese military officers. This is his second visit to China during his term of office. According to Hong Kong media reports, Richardson said he had constructive and frank discussions with his Chinese counterparts.
On January 15, the website of the Chinese Ministry of Defense announced that Li Zuocheng, a member of the Central Military Commission and chief of staff of the Military Commission Joint Staff, met with visiting US Naval Operations Minister Richard Richardson on the 81st floor. When talking about the Taiwan issue, Li Zuocheng stressed that the Taiwan issue is Chinas internal affairs, which concerns the core interests of the Chinese side and the national feelings of the Chinese people and does not allow any external interference. If someone wants to separate Taiwan from China, the Chinese army will safeguard the reunification of the motherland and the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country at all costs.

Chinas Ministry of Defense and Ministry of Foreign Affairs have repeatedly responded to the US warships crossing the Taiwan Strait. Ren Guoqiang, a spokesman for the Ministry of Defense, said that China controls the trend of US warships and calls on the US side to abide by the one-China principle and the provisions of the three Sino-US joint communiques and handle Taiwan-related issues carefully. Geng Shuang, spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, also pointed out that the Taiwan issue concerns Chinas sovereignty and territorial integrity and is the most important and sensitive issue in Sino-US relations. China urges the United States to abide by the one-China principle and the provisions of the three joint communiques and to handle Taiwan-related issues prudently and properly so as not to undermine Sino-US relations and the peace and stability of the Taiwan Strait.
