On May 2, 2018, State Councilor and Minister of foreign affairs Wang Yi held talks with members of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Korean Labour Party and Li Yonghao of foreign affairs in Pyongyang. Wang Yi said that the traditional friendship between China and DPRK is a valuable asset for both sides. It is a strategic choice for both sides to continue to inherit and develop the traditional friendly relations between China and DPRK. China is willing to work with the DPRK to put the important consensus of the top leaders of the two countries to reality, strengthen the communication and coordination of the political and diplomatic departments of the two sides, promote bilateral economic and trade cooperation between China and the DPRK, activate the cultural exchanges between the two countries, and continue to inject new vitality into the relations between China and the DPRK in the new period. Wang Yi said that China congratulated the leaders of the two sides of the peninsula on their successful meeting and achieved important results. China fully supports the DPRK to go out of a road of development which is in line with its national conditions and fully supports the DPRK to concentrate its efforts on economic construction. China actively comments on the recent positive changes in the situation on the peninsula, fully supports the DPRKs commitment to the denuclearization of the peninsula, fully supports the settlement of the legitimate security concerns of the DPRK and fully supports the improvement of the relations between the north and the south of the peninsula. We hope that the DPRK US dialogue will be held successfully and substantial progress has been made. China is ready to strengthen communication with the DPRK and continue to play a positive role in the process of political settlement of the Peninsula issue. Wang Yi expressed his gratitude to Chairman Kim Jeong-eun, the Korean party and the government, to attach great importance to the death and injury of Chinese citizens before the major traffic accidents in North Korea, and to carry out the treatment and rehabilitation. Li Yonghao said that Chairman Kim Jeong-eun cherished the traditional friendship between the DPRK and China. Adhering to and developing DPRK friendly relations at a new starting point is the unswerving position of the DPRK party and government. The supreme leaders of the two countries successfully met in Beijing and reached important consensus on strengthening strategic communication and cooperation, which has a milestone in the history of DPRK China relations. The DPRK is willing to work together with China to conscientiously implement the consensus of the leaders of the two countries, to close the exchange of political and diplomatic departments, to strengthen practical cooperation, to promote cultural exchanges, and to prepare for the 70th anniversary commemoration of the establishment of diplomatic relations in the next year. The historic meeting between the leaders of the north and south of the peninsula is of great significance. The DPRK is willing to maintain close communication with China on issues such as the denuclearization of the peninsula and the establishment of a peninsula peace mechanism and continue to strengthen dialogue with all parties concerned. On the same day, Wang Yi went to Wanshou Tai to present flowers to the late leader of the DPRK, Kim Il-Sung and Kim Jong-il, and to pay tribute to the Sino Korean friendship tower.
