Overseas Network, Dec. 20, according to Yonhap News Agency, on Dec. 20, President Wen Zaiyin of South Korea, listening to the work plan of the Ministry of Defense of South Korea for the year 2019, pointed out that although the process of denuclearization is steadily advancing, the Korean Peninsula is still in a temporary and peaceful state, and next year will work to build a permanent peace mechanism on the Peninsula.
Wen said that until last year, the peninsula was still in a state of imminent tension, but in just one year, the DPRK declared an end to the war on the peninsula, opened the era of peace on the Peninsula through dialogue, and signed the 9.19 Military Agreement to stop all hostilities in an all-round way. The DPRK also demolished the guard post (GP) and disarmed the common guard area on a pilot basis.
Wen said that he believed that the people of the Peninsula had experienced peace. He stressed that the Korean Army has contributed to creating a peaceful atmosphere on the peninsula with its strong national defense force. Only if the Korean army continues to maintain a strong national defense capability can the era of peace on the peninsula continue. In the context of the rapidly changing security situation on the Peninsula, the Korean Army should speed up its own pace of reform and develop into a trustworthy army for the people.
Wen pointed out that only when the military acts on the basis of fairness and transparency can it be trusted by the people. Therefore, it is necessary to disclose the details of the defense budget. In 2019, South Koreas defense budget reached 46.7 trillion won ($285.8 billion), a year-on-year increase of 3.5 trillion won) to a record high. He demanded that the military implement the budget transparently and work to improve the national defense force.
