Overseas Network, December 17 (Reuters) - Damascus, Syria, has not had a Christmas atmosphere for many years. In recent days, the streets of Damascus have begun to decorate Christmas trees and a series of lighting accessories. For years, this was the front line of the Syrian war, and it was not until earlier this year that government forces eliminated the last rebels in the capital.

Preparations for Christmas this year are in place, said Hannaal-Saad, a local shopkeeper. There are no mortars at last.

Mortars used to land in Abbas Square in Damascus. Nowadays many streets around here are decorated with lights and Christmas trees. Local musicians are also working with patrols to plan Christmas parades they havent seen in years.

We are very happy. Children can now come to church without worrying about their safety, and as parents they will be more reassured. A local musician said.

During the Syrian war, rebels used shelling to kill about 2,000 people in Damascus, according to Reuters data.

This year, Damascus was regained state control after Syrian government forces recovered the Yermuk area south of the capital.

We didnt dare to stay in the street for a long time before. Abel Ismail, a community resident, had no choice but to live in an area once controlled by an armed faction.

We had no electricity, no lights, not to mention the Christmas decorations, she added. So this year we were very excited to see the decorated streets and houses.
