Canadian Desire for Life: Comrade Bethunes Moving Out from the Embassy in China

At 5 p.m. this afternoon, the officer of the Canadian Embassy in China sent a message about Bethune, introducing his experience as an international anti-fascist fighter during the Spanish Civil War.

Bethune is a hero of Canada and a symbol of friendship between the Chinese and Canadian people. It should be reasonable for the Canadian Embassy in China to commemorate him. But for well-known reasons, the official news is obviously speculative.

If we really want to restore the good impression of Chinas netizens on Canada, the Canadian authorities need to be down-to-earth to do a good job, seriously reflect, and find their independence and dignity, rather than consuming Comrade Bethune.

Norman Bethune (March 3, 1890 - November 12, 1939), a great name, is well known to generations of Chinese.

Because of Bethune, the Chinese people have a natural preference for Canada. He is an invaluable business card to promote the image of Canada in China.

During the Anti-Japanese War, Bethune came thousands of miles to the front line of the Anti-Japanese War to support the spirit of the Chinese peoples anti-Japanese war selflessly, which is deeply missed by the Chinese people. Comrade Mao Zedong wrote in his masterpiece Memorial of Bethune: A pure man, a noble man, a moral man, a man who has escaped from the low taste.

Eighty years later, the Chinese still remember Comrade Bethune, which shows that the Chinese are nostalgic.

However, Bethune cant be confused with the Canadian authorities today, and the grievances need to be distinct.

The same Canadian, who came to China not too far, ended up in a detention facility, and two of them were ready to help at once? What is the reason behind the messengers heart is not clear?

So the response of netizens is basically like this.

The actions of the Canadian authorities during this period not only discredited Bethunes face, but also immediately destroyed Canadas good image accumulated over the years.

Bethunes Contribution

Born on March 3, 1890, in the family of a medical clergyman in Levenhurst, Ontario, Canada, he graduated from the Medical College of the University of Toronto in 1916 with a doctorate degree, served as a British military doctor (captain), director of surgery, won a prize from the Royal Edinburgh Medical College in 1922, and practised medicine in Detroit in 1924.

In 1933, he became a consultant to the Canadian Federal Health Department and a director of the American Thoracic Surgery Society.

The Canadian health care system has been praised by the world so far. Bethunes design was indispensable at the beginning of its establishment. These ideas were attributed to his participation in the International Medical (Physiological) Conference in Moscow in August 1935 and his comprehensive understanding of the Soviet Unions social health care system.

Meanwhile, as a thoracic surgeon at the Royal Victoria Hospital of Montreal, Bethune invented and improved 12 surgical instruments and published 14 influential academic papers.

In November 1935, Bethune disclosed his status as a member of the Canadian Communist Party, and later generations took 1935 as his time to join the Party.

Bethune, a middle-aged man, will become famous if he follows the trajectory of life in the middle-class stage of the West: study, struggle and temper. He is absolutely a Canadian elite with status, wealth and decency.

But he has become a firm communist fighter, the ideal and goal of life is no longer mediocre Western elite, it is a revolutionary era.

In October 1936, Bethune joined the international column in the Spanish Civil War to defend the Republic and fight against the Franco Fascist forces.

Bethune founded the worlds first mobile blood station in Madrid and the mobile first aid system for the wounded, which is the prototype of the mobile military surgical hospital widely used in the future.

Eight months later, he returned to Canada, during which time the Canadian Communist Party was declared illegal by the Canadian government, and Bethune went to the United States.

On July 30, 1937, Los Angeles Medical Bureau held a banquet of Friends of the Spanish People. Bethune met Tao Xingzhi, a Chinese educator, and learned about the July 7 Incident. He said that he would come to China to support the War of Resistance whenever the Chinese people needed it.

In terms of organizational relations, Bethune accepted the dispatch from the Communist Party of Canada and the United States. In January 1938, he led an international medical team to Yanan with $5,000 medical equipment.

On his way through Hong Kong, he wrote to his ex-wife, Frances (marriage, divorce, remarriage, divorce), explaining why he wanted to come to China: In a society full of conspiracy and corruption, I will not stand idly by. I will not forgive those who are greedy to wage war on others.

When he arrived in Yanan at the end of March, Mao Zedong met him the next day and talked for three hours. Bethune proposed to go to the front of the Anti-Japanese War. Mao Zedong agreed that he would go to Mount Wutai.

In June, Bethune came to the Jin-Cha-Ji Military Region, and Commander Nie Rongzhen met him in the village of Kingangku. Before Mao Zedong sent a telegram to Nie Rongzhen asking for a monthly allowance of 100 yuan for Bethune. At that time, Mao Zedongs allowance was 5 yuan and soldiers were 1 yuan, but the 100 yuan was used for medical treatment.

Bethune, as a health consultant in the Military Region, has been in a state of extreme busyness from work to death.

First, set up health schools

2. Training Medical Cadres

Third, compiling medical textbooks

4. Establishing Wartime Medical System in Base Areas

Fifth, formulate rules and regulations

And these are his daily work besides the various large and small operations, in addition, the mobile medical team is also led by a doctor-in-white.

He will also continue to write letters to the Communist Party of the United States and Canada (which the Canadian government cant expect), asking for mobile X-ray machines, vehicles, silver dollars, equipment, generators and other support. The embarrassed Communist Party of the United States and Canada could not reach Bethune by replying to letters, remittances and telegrams. First, the Japanese army blocked the base areas, and second, the Kuomintang intercepted them.

Bethune also publicizes to the international community the Eighth Route Army and Communist base areas, such as the Manchester Guardian, two articles a month. I dont know why those online historic inventors have to arrange their black materials? It is thought that he came to China on impulse to take a vacation.

In the second half of 1939, Bethune planned to return to North America to raise funds and equipment. Before leaving, he would visit 20 field hospitals.

However, when rescuing the wounded in the battle of Feitianling, Lianyuan County, Hebei Province, Bethunes left middle finger was cut and infected by a scalpel, which worsened to sepsis. He died on November 12 in Huangshikou Village, Tangxian County, Hebei Province, aged 49, and still had deep feelings for his ex-wife.

Such a great internationalist fighter, before the 1970s, the Canadian authorities had a demeaning attitude towards the name.

After the opening of Sino-Canadian relations, Canada realized the importance of Bethunes three words in Sino-Canadian relations and had to change its face and re-examine the Canadian Communist Party member who had been regarded as an alien.

In 1972, the Canadian government awarded Bethune the title of Canadian Historic Celebrity.

In 1973, the priests house of the former Presbyterian Church in Gravenhurst Town was purchased as the Bethune Memorial, which was officially opened to the public in 1976.

When Old Trudeau visited China in 1973, he ordered 50 bronze Bethune medals and selected two as gifts for Chairman Mao and Premier Zhou.

In 1996, Bethunes birthplace was listed as a historic attraction in Canada and became a tourist attraction for Chinese tourists.

In 2016, when Little Trudeau visited China, he found the Bethune Memorial Medal of that year and presented it to the Chinese leaders.

Bethune had never imagined that he could make such a great contribution to Sino-Canadian relations before he died. Whats more, 80 years later, Canada had lost even that little sovereignty in front of the United States.

The Canadian government is not a little stained by Bethunes light. Now it is willing to serve the undeniable political purposes of the United States. Can Comrade Bethune be calmed by this evil spirit?

In memory of Bethune, they do not deserve it now!
