Wang Yi, State Councilor and Foreign Minister, delivered a speech at a seminar on November 11, saying that China will never stand idly by and will spare no effort to safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese citizens. Later in the day, at the regular press conference of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, foreign media reporters asked this question: Does Wang Yis remark refer to Meng Wangzhou?
Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang said that Wang Yis State Councilor and foreign minister made a very clear statement in this mornings speech about the Chinese governments solemn stance and seriousness in safeguarding the legitimate rights of Chinese citizens. This, of course, refers to the consistent position of the Chinese government under any circumstances, including in fact some specific circumstances, as well as the recent Meng Wanzhou case, which we have repeatedly submitted to the Canadian and American governments for negotiation. Our position in the process of negotiating the case with Canada and the United States is in complete agreement with that stated by Foreign Minister Wang Yi this morning.
