The Maritime Self-Defense Force is preparing to retrofit three submarines of the corresponding level one by one from FY2019, and set up a special area for women in the ship to protect the privacy of female crew members. It plans to formally board female crew members from FY203. Each submarine has six female crew members, accounting for about 10% of all crew members.

Reported that not only the Maritime Self-Defense Force, the Land Self-Defense Force and the Air Self-Defense Force are also facing the problem of insufficient recruitment. In view of this, Japans Ministry of Defense is taking relevant countermeasures. For example, since October this year, the Ministry of Defense has raised the age limit for self-defense recruits from 26 to 32.
