On December 7, 2018, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks with Foreign Minister Li Yonghao, a member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Korean Labour Party, in Beijing.
Wang Yi said that he welcomed Foreign Minister Li Yonghaos visit to China, which is our fifth meeting this year. The coming 2018 has been an extraordinary year for China-DPRK relations. General Secretary Xi Jinping held three important meetings with Chairman Kim Jong-un to reach a series of important consensus and push bilateral relations into a new historical stage. With the joint efforts of China, DPRK and other parties concerned, the situation on the Korean Peninsula has eased and the Peninsula issue has returned to the track of political settlement, which fully conforms to the common aspirations of all parties, including the DPRK.
Wang Yi pointed out that maintaining, consolidating and developing Sino-Korean relations is the unswerving policy of the Chinese Party and government. The Third Plenary Session of the Seventh Central Committee of the Korean Labour Party has decided on a new strategic line, which fully conforms to the fundamental and long-term interests of the country and the nation of Korea. China firmly supports DPRKs development path in line with its national conditions, and supports DPRKs efforts to maintain stability, develop economy and improve peoples livelihood. China is ready to work with the DPRK to promote greater development of China-DPRK relations in accordance with the important consensus of the two parties and the two countriestop leaders and the common wishes of the two peoples. Both sides should maintain high-level exchanges and strengthen strategic leadership of bilateral relations. Next years celebration of the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries should be well organized, the traditional friendship between China and the DPRK should be inherited and carried forward, exchanges and cooperation in various fields should be strengthened, and the relations between the two parties and the two countries should be promoted to achieve new development.
Wang Yi said that the current Korean Peninsula overall continued to slow down and momentum. China and DPRK should continue to promote the positive development of the peninsula situation along the direction of denuclearization. China hopes that the DPRK and the US will maintain dialogue, balance their concerns and achieve the goals set in the DPRK-US Joint Statement. China also supports North-South exchanges and interaction to promote reconciliation and cooperation.
Li Yonghao said that this years DPRK-China relations have ushered in a new development situation. Chairman Kim Jong-un visited China three times and reached a high degree of agreement with General Secretary Xi Jinping on the development of bilateral relations. The DPRK and Chinas diplomatic departments have made positive progress in implementing the important consensus of the two countriestop leaders. Next year marks the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the DPRK and China. The two sides should jointly organize celebrations, deepen traditional friendship, strengthen exchanges and cooperation in various fields, and promote DPRK-China relations to a higher level.
Li Yonghao said that in order to implement the important decision of the Third Plenary Session of the Seventh Central Committee of the Korean Labour Party, the DPRK is actively committed to creating a peaceful external environment. With the efforts of the DPRK side, the Korean Peninsula has experienced a relaxation situation. Substantive progress has been made in North-South reconciliation. The DPRK and the United States have met at a summit and issued a joint statement. The DPRKs position on denuclearization of the peninsula and maintenance of peace and stability on the Peninsula remains unchanged. It is hoped that the DPRK and the United States can establish the necessary mutual trust and practically move towards each other. The DPRK highly appreciates Chinas positive efforts to promote the political settlement of the Peninsula issue in accordance with the changing situation on the peninsula. It is willing to continue to maintain communication and coordination with China and jointly safeguard the stability and development of the peninsula and the region.
The two sides also exchanged views on other issues of common concern.
